Exmoor Zoo is a special place that enables you to get up close and personal! Opened in 1982 the zoo is now an ideal family venue, especially for the kids. The zoo is always changing so no repeat visit is ever the same.
Recent exhibits such as caracal, puma, maned wolves, tapir, sand cats and the famous “Exmoor Beast” can be seen amongst the unique and rare smaller animals for which the zoo provides “natural” enclosures. Carefully planted shrubs and trees as they have matured along the winding zoo paths keep you wondering what is next, providing a very relaxing and natural atmosphere!
Exmoor Zoo is different, neither a wildlife park or a city zoo, but a more friendly and contact orientated zoo which has grown into the North Devon countryside. You get to meet the animals, join in the handling sessions, touch a snake, hold a spider, feed a wallaby and learn about the animals during talks and feed times.
Exmoor Zoo has just been awarded both the best small attraction in Devon and the whole of the Southwest – a great achievement. The zoo is not so large so as to prevent you seeing everything in a visit and has some very rare and unusual animals on display – many of which you will not see in other UK zoos!
Lynton and Barnstaple steam railway
Woody Bay Station is an original Lynton & Barnstaple Railway station, opened in 1898, and closed along with the rest of the railway in September 1935. Purchased by us in 1995, what you can see today at the station is just the beginning of an exciting project to rebuild one of the world’s most famous and picturesque narrow gauge railways; the legendary Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.
The ideal starting point for a two mile round trip through some of the loveliest countryside in North Devon, Woody Bay Station is the place to board our little narrow gauge train for a journey back in time.
All trains run to Killington Lane Halt, where you can if you wish, leave the train and walk to other local destinations – including the lovely local village of Parracombe, home to our nearest Pub – the Fox & Goose (open most days – but best to check first). Alternatively for those with more stamina – the Hunters Inn at Heddons Mouth is also highly recommended. When you are ready, walk back to Killington Lane Halt and catch a later train back to Woody Bay.
Quince Honey Farm
Quince Honey Farm is a family run working honey farm which is situated in beautiful North Devon where we have been producing honey since 1949. Our 1500 hives are kept deep in the North Devon Countryside amongst the clover fields and wild flowers from which the bees collect their sweet nectar. ‘Beeworld’ is renowned for its up close exhibition of honey bees, interactive buttons can be pressed to see inside the hives, magnifying the bees even closer. Nowhere else in the world can you get such an intimate view of the inner workings of the honey bee society without needing protective equipment. ‘Beeworld’ is a hive of fascinating information with 18 colonies to observe and new displays are being added every year.
The ‘Happy Bee play hive’ is our new indoor soft play centre, so why not enjoy our Devonshire cream tea and tempt yourselves to our delightful honeycomb ice cream from our cafe while the kids buzz around the play hive. Also in the play hive is a new colony of leaf cutting ants marching back and forth building nests for your viewing pleasure.
Quince Honey Farm is the perfect all weather attraction with something for everyone no matter what age. If you want somewhere interesting and educational as well as fun then make a bee-line for Quince Honey Farm!
